News: Nike Manila 2012

NIKE’S WE RUN RACE SERIES RETURNS TO MANILA
We Run MNL 10K inspires and connects runners globally with Nike+

official press release:

PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 2012 – Nike’s We Run race returns to Manila for a second year, to inspire, motivate and connect runners around the world. On December 2, 2012, Filipino runners will be part of the global We Run race movement, which will see a total of 395,500 runners from 34 cities participating—establishing a new global community of runners through Nike’s most connected race series using the innovative Nike+ technology. The We Run race series kicked off on September 1 in Prague, Czech Republic, and will conclude on December 15 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Nike’s We Run Manila 10K race will energize the streets of Pasay City with the 13,000 high-octane runners expected to make tracks all over the SM Mall of Asia’s grounds. Set against the remarkable view of Manila Bay, the initial stretch of the race will let runners pass through the commercialized area of the Mall of Asia with the SMX Convention Center and the latest icon of the area, the eye-shaped SM Bay City Arena. Runners are set to leave urban commercial scenery and head towards the fields along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard. Closing in on the halfway point of the race, runners will then pass the upcoming Belle Casino, a gold complex glistening in the morning sun. As they take a turn on Pacific Avenue and race past the same landmarks, runners will come upon the iconic ferris-wheel along Seaside Boulevard that marks the final kilometer to the finish line. The panoramic run would not be complete without an engaging en route entertainment featuring some of Manila’s top musical acts.

Meeting the runners at the finish line is the Race Village that will offer an array of services. Runners can expect to be pampered with massage booths and get recharged at any of the refreshment stalls while being entertained by the energetic musical line-up.

“Nike’s We Run race is the celebration of running across the world, the culmination of every runner’s dedication and commitment to train harder, defy expectations and push their bodies’ limits. Nike aims to revolutionize the running experience, by allowing runners to inspire, motivate and connect with other runners globally through the Nike+ Technology”, shared Sanjay Gangopadhyay, Marketing Director of Nike South East Asia. “With the second edition of the We Run race in Manila, Nike envisions Filipinos, the youth in particular, to further move the local running scene forward by leading the active lifestyle movement.”

This year, Nike is taking inspiration to a new level as runners will be able to follow two of Philippines most popular lifestyle bloggers, Robbie Becroft of robbieoffduty.com and Lissa Kahayon of lissakahayon.com who will be embarking on their first We Run race. Follow their We Run journey as they take on the challenge of preparing for Nike’s We Run MNL 10K race, blogging at each step of the journey, and witness how Nike elevates their everyday running experience with the various product offerings including the Nike+ ecosystem.

To get race-ready, Nike will organize four training sessions focusing on proper running techniques and tips. Runners will also be able to test out the Nike+ Running app (available on iOS and Android), and try out the season’s latest running products. These clinics will be led by podiatrists and Nike Training Club instructors to further educate individuals on how they can reach their potential as runners.

The registration for Nike’s We Run race will commence on Monday, October 8 2012 online through www.facebook.com/NikeRunningPH and also on-ground at selected retail stores. Registration details are as follows:

News: Run United 3 2012

The Afroman Distanced race (a.k.a. 32km race) is back again for runners in the Philippines! Aside from this category, the race will also offer 500m, 3km, 5km, 10km, and 21km races.

A lot of runners will be joining either the 21km or 32km race categories to complete the Trilogy and complete the third part of the Huge Medal Series.

Unfortunately, I won't be one of them to complete the Series, having missed the first leg last March 2012. But that won't stop me from joining this race and having a good time in it!

RunRio's official Statement:

Another Running Spree at Run United 3

All set for the third leg of the Runrio Trilogy 2012 on September 16

Run United is back, after a nearly three-month break. And as the cliché goes, ‘the third time is a charm’. Last year, in fact, a record number of runners estimated at over 14,000 participated in Run United 3.

Run United 3, the third leg of the Run Rio Trilogy, has always been much anticipated because it offers what is dubbed as the ‘Afroman distance’ or 32k category—not usually included in other run races. Of course, on top of the other race categories: the Ceelin 500m dash, 3k, 5k, 10k, and 21k.

“The 32k Afroman Distance in RU3 can be a preparatory race for the full 42.195km category in the upcoming 1st ever Run United Philippine Marathon slated on October 28. RUPM will still have the shorter categories: 500m dash, 3K, 5K, 10K, and 21K.” said Alex Panlilio, Head of Unilab Active Health (ULAH).

Meanwhile, according to premiere race organizer Coach Rio dela Cruz, the runners’ anticipation over Run United 3 will be all worth it as new features and surprises await them on September 16. For one, there will be new routes as well as different starting and finish lines again for Run United 3 in the 21K and 32K categories, like in the previous two races for 21K.

The 32K runners will have a gun start at Bonifacio Global City (BGC) starting at 3am, an hour ahead of the 21k runners. They will be led from BGC to take their first 10k in University Parkway area, then move up to Kalayaan Flyover. Then, they will go all the way down to Buendia, take left at Roxas Boulevard, turnaround taking the roads of Vicente Sotto, Diosdado Macapagal and on to EDSA before finally turning left at Seaside Boulevard for the finish at the Mall of Asia (MOA).

The 21k will have an earlier gun start at 4am compared to Run United 2’s 430am. They will have the same route as the 32k runners, but instead of going to EDSA they will turn right after Macapagal Avenue, turning right at Seaside Boulevard and then all the way to the finish line in MOA.

“Run United 3 runners will get to run across three cities— Taguig, Makati and Pasay. Based from the feedback we got from them, they really enjoyed the experience and the new routes. The earlier gun start of both race categories will give runners a safer route as well,” said Dela Cruz of RunRio Inc., the race organizer.

Online registration for Run United 3 started on August 6 and will continue until September 2, 2012. In-store registration will start on August 13 and will be up to September 9, 2012. Registration venues include Riovana in BGC and Katipunan, Quezon City; and Toby’s at SM Mall of Asia and Trinoma.

The runners will receive their complete race kits upon registration (Active Health Sun Visor, Singlet, Bib with B-Tag and wrist tag for 500m dash runners). The wrist tag for 500m dash kid’s runner which is usually given on race day will now be included in their race kits upon registration.

Run United 3, which is for the benefit of Gawad Kalusugan and Children’s Hour, is part of the ULAH running series. Run United started with only 8,000 runners when it was launched in March 2010 and the numbers have steadily grown in succeeding events. An estimated 14,000 runners participated during its last offering— at 2012 Run United 2.

Run United 1 on March 4 started off this year’s RunRio Trilogy, followed by Run United 2 last June 17. Runners who completed all the longest distances (21k-21k-32k) in all of the three Run United races will be recognized at the RunRio Trilogy Awards Night.

36th Milo Marathon - Full Circle!

0 km in 2008

To be honest, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be able to do this race. It wasn't just the cut-off time that frightened me but it was the impression I got all those years ago that the ones running the 42.2km race would only be the elite Filipino runner.. the ones sent to the Sea Games, the Olympics, etc. to represent our Beloved country. These were runners who have been running most of their lives, who had 3% body fat, who were dark from all that running, and who wore short shorts!

2008 - KM 0 - 10: IN THE BEGINNING!

I first experienced Milo running events waaayyy back in 2008! At that time, I just had to join this race as it was the oldest in the country (even older than me) and the most popular running event. It was one of my first races and I signed up for the 10km race.

Per wasn't even running yet but she was there to support and cheer for me at the finish line.

It was that same year during Milo Finals 2008 that Per ran one of her first 10km races, and one of our first couple 10km races too.

2009 - KM 10 - 21.1: LEVEL UP!

My first Milo Half Marathon Event. It was a good experience for me, and Per ran the 10km on her own.

2010 - KM 0: BREAK TIME!

No Milo race for us this year as I got tired of it and didn't see any reason to join that race again. We joined other races instead.

2011 - KM 21.1: RETURN TO HALF MARATHON!

In 2011, there was a change of Race Organizer to RunRio.Inc and a big incentive for 21km finishers was the marathon medal. But it comes with a catch: you have to finish the race at 2 hours 30 minutes or below!

My confidence wasn't that high when they had the Eliminations so I skipped that event and joined another Half Marathon event in UP instead. But all that time, I was challenged to get the finisher medal.

And I did during the Milo Finals last December 2011, by a measly 8 seconds from the cut-off time!

My first Milo medal! Crunchy on the outside!

Happy finishers!

2012: KM 21.1 - KM 42.2: FULL CIRCLE!

There were a lot of doubts about whether I could finish the full marathon within the cut-off time due to lack of long runs (I wasn't able to complete the required weekend LSD runs and usually quit that day, tired and defeated), and even had a slow half marathon finish time recently (surpassed 3 hours).

The cut-off time for this race was 6 hours.

Alvin thought at first that I should just do the half marathon and run it fast, but what will I do with a second Milo half marathon medal?

No, it was the 42.2km race for me or bust!

Panic mode began as I tried to put the mileage in... the returning PF pain did not help at all, and just added to the difficulty here. But Alvin was able to guide me the last few weeks for this race.

On race day, there were a lot of prayers made by me, a lot of mind games, a lot of walk breaks, a lot of water station stops, a lot of pain, a lot more pain, a lot more prayers and a lot more mind games!

It was hard for me. No other words to describe it!

Running along Roxas Blvd.

At the last 3km, Alvin was waiting for me and paced me to the finish line. Clearly, one of us was in a good mood!

But after all is said and done, I am proud to show this:

My biggest medal so far

7th marathon done, 4th for the Philippines and 3rd for Year 2012 (my most in one calendar year).

Thanks to Alvin for the training he gave me and much needed PUSH (figuratively and literally) at the last 3km of the race.

Per completed her 10km race as well!

PRAISE GOD! TO HIM ALL THE GLORY!
WITH HIM, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!
